Early Life

Noeline Brown was born in Sydney's inner west to Leo and Dyra Brown. She has two brothers, Leo and Peter. Her father was actively involved in the Postal Union.

Noeline lived in Stanmore all of her childhood, and went to Stanmore High School, where she was School Captain in her final year.

Her first job was at age 15, when she worked in the Marrickville Municipal Library, and at it was at this early age she developed a love for the theatre.

Noeline continued to live in the inner city at Pyrmont until the mid '70's.

Before long Noeline was acting with the New Theatre and Sydenham's Pocket Playhouse, where she was 'discovered' and began her professional career in 1962.

Two years later the Mavis Bramston Show started on television, which made everyone connected with it a household name. Noeline not only worked in the show but created the Mavis character.

After a short stint in the UK, Noeline returned to a series of radio, theatre and TV performances in Australia.

In all she has appeared in hundreds of shows on television, stage, film and radio receiving popular and professional acclaim for her work, including a Logie Award.

She has been a member of Actors Equity/MEEA since 1962.

Picture: With Ross Higgins and Kev Golsby, Noeline starred in "The Naked Vicar Show" on ABC Radio and the Seven Network. The Show introduced numerous catch phrases including "You're not wrong Narelle", "Bruce....piss off" and "The Kingswood! You're not taking the Kingswood!" The show also launched Ted Bullpitt onto an unsuspecting Australia. Ted started in a sketch and then developed into "Kingswood Country", one of Australia's longest running comedies. (1977)

Wintergreen Productions

In 1976 Noeline married Tony Sattler, one of the two writer/producers of the Naked Vicar Show, which started as a radio show on ABC radio nationally, then went to stage and later to TV.

Noeline, and husband and partner Tony Sattler, moved to the Southern Highlands over 25 years ago, commuting often daily for work, and running their business from there - Wintergreen Productions

Wintergreen Productions' clients have included the Queensland Government, The New South Wales Government, all major television networks, Qantas and the Gold Coast Indy Car Grand Prix company.

Noeline and Tony Sattler

On August 1st 1976 Noeline married Naked Vicar Show writer/producer, Tony Sattler.

The company also created, designed and built the much acclaimed Mary Mackillop Museum for the Sisters of St Joseph in North Sydney, which was blessed by Pope John Paul II and officially opened by Annita Keating.

Political Interests

Noeline was one of many well-known Australians who appeared in the successful "It's Time" campaign that brought Gough Whitlam to power in 1972.

She was an active campaigner against the Vietnam war and has maintained an interest in social, political and community issues throughout her career.

Noeline joined the Southern Highlands branch of the Labor Party after the defeat of the national Keating government in the early nineties.

Concerned at developments in conservative politics Noeline stood for the Labor Party in the 1999 State Election for the seat of Southern Highlands.

After a short but successful campaign, Southern Highlands went from a safe Liberal seat to a marginal seat.

Since then Noeline spent two years with the NSW Premier's Council for Women. She is a Member of the Australian Republican Movement and a Member of Emily's List.

In 2002 Premier Bob Carr announced that Noeline would stand again as the Labor Party's candidate for Southern Highlands in the 2003 state election, where she was to succeed again in increasing the party's primary vote, but was narrowly defeated by the incumbent member.

Community Interests

Noeline has retained an active interest in community affairs - within her profession, the arts, and the community in which she lives.

Her work as member (now the Chair - first woman Chairperson in 50 years) of the Actors Benevolent Fund is well known to her peers. She is a "Friend of the ABC", and a tireless advocate for her profession.

Noeline's interest in the arts is reflected in her role as a Member of the National Gallery, and a Custodian of the Library Society of NSW.

She is past patron of the Southern Highlands Regional Gallery, and Custodian of the State Library of NSW.

Since 1999, she has been patron of Starting Points, a charity for children with special needs. In 2006, she received a "Children's Week Community for Children Award" for "volunteering to improve the lives of children".

Noeline is an Australia Day Ambassador - travelling to Henty in 2008, is also a Member Australians for Just Refugees and joint Patron of the Southern Highlands Renal Appeal.

Current Interests

Noeline spent much of 2003 engaged in writing her autobiography - "Noeline Brown - Longterm Memoir", published in 2005 by Allen & Unwin.

She was back on the road again starring in Peta Murray's play WALLFOWERING with Doug Scroope. The tour travelled to 85 venues throughout Australia between 2004 and 2006. Noeline was nominated for a 2007 Mo Award for her appearance in this play.

Noeline appeared on Channel 7's national Celebrity Spelling Bee - The War of the Words on October 30 2005. She won the competition, taking home $50,000 for her favourite charity - the Actors' Benevolent Fund.

Noeline appeared with an hilarious performance in a film called 'Razzle Dazzle' in November 2005. This Australian film was directed by Darren Ashton.

Most recently Noeline received The Glugs 2008 Norman Kessell Memorial Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress, playing Florence Foster Jenkins in Peter Quilter's play, 'Glorious' at the Ensemble Theatre. Her co-star, Jonathan Gavin also won an award for best supporting actor.

Australia's First Ambassador for Ageing

On 12th April 2008 Minister for Ageing, Mrs Justine Elliot announced the appointment of Noeline as the Ambassador for Ageing - to promote positive ageing.

The Federal Government created the Ambassador for Ageing to ensure that older Australians have a strong voice, a direct link into Government and a person to promote positive and active ageing.

The Ambassador for Ageing will be involved in a range of activities and events that promote positive and active ageing within the community as well as being a spokesperson for older Australians.

Noeline attended Killara Gardens nursing home Open Day in Sydney on Saturday 17 May 2008.   Residents and Guests enjoyed time to chat with Noeline while being entertained by The Penguins three piece band.  

Noeline delivered an entertaining and true message of healthy ageing and the importance of learning something new every day - even if you can't remember where you left your keys!
